SPORT - Spine Patient Outcome Research Trial - A Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial of Surgical and Non-Surgical Approaches to the Treatment of Low Back Pain

Principal Investigator: James N. Weinstein, DO MS

Project Director: David Aman
Programmers: Susan Gallagher and Tony Hanberg
Network Director: John Gilman

The study tests the effectiveness of different treatments for the three most common diagnoses of lumbar spine conditions (herniated disc, spinal stenosis, and degenerative spondylolisthesis). The purpose is to learn which of two commonly prescribed treatments (surgery and non-surgical therapy) work better for specific types of low back pain.
